The Consequences of Speeding

Don't ride fast!

speeding

The fast breeze passed through with the sound of the roaring motorcycle engine is an indescribable feeling. These are the feelings that give riders freedom. However, that freedom comes with a price that you might pay in full, especially when it comes to speed. While the thrill of speed is undeniable, going over the speed limit or driving too fast for the rush or sensation increases the risk of accidents. This will be turning a regular ride into a major problem in the blink of an eye. At KAASS LAW, we personally experienced firsthand the consequences of speed-related motorcycle accidents. We understand the physics, the risks, and the legal complexities that follow such incidents. The following will provide information on the dangers of excessive speed, exploring the spectrum of consequences from minor injuries to fatal crashes and emphasizing the critical importance of responsible riding.

The Physics of Speed: Why It Matters

First, we must understand the physics behind speeding and its importance in influencing motorcycle safety. Kinetic energy, the energy measured in motion, increases exponentially based on the given speed. This means that a motorcycle riding at 60 mph, for instance, has four times the kinetic energy of a motorcycle traveling at 30 mph due to kinetic energy being proportional to the square of velocity. This energy must dissipate because the faster you're going, the more energy there is to absorb, and the more likely serious injury or, worse, death.

Furthermore, speed affects a rider's ability to control the motorcycle. The higher the speed, the slower the reaction time, making it harder to avoid obstacles or navigate curves. The faster you go will ultimately decrease the sudden change in traffic or road conditions. This diminished reaction time, combined with the increased kinetic energy, creates a recipe for disaster.

The Spectrum of Consequences: From Minor Injuries to Fatalities

The consequences of speeding on a motorcycle can start from minor injuries or damages to bruises or major injuries and fatalities. The consequences of the outcome often depends on various factors, including but not limited to:

  • Minor Injuries: Even a fairly low-speed crash can result in significant injuries for a motorcyclist, such as road rash, fractures, and soft tissue injuries are common even at 30 mph. While these injuries may not be life-threatening, they can require extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and time off work.
  • Moderate Injuries: As speed increases, so does the severity of injuries. At speeds between 30 and 50 mph, riders are more likely to suffer broken bones, internal injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. These injuries can lead to long-term health problems and disabilities.
  • Severe Injuries: At speeds exceeding 50 mph, the risk of life-threatening injuries dramatically increases. These injuries can include severe head trauma, spinal cord injuries, multiple fractures, and internal organ damage. The impact forces at these speeds are often too great for the human body to withstand, even with protective gear.
  • Fatal Crashes: Speed is a significant contributing factor in fatal motorcycle accidents. High-speed crashes often result in instantaneous death or death shortly after the accident due to the severity of the injuries. The impact forces at these speeds are often fatal.

As a reminder, UC Berkeley's study shows that 35% of motor vehicle accident fatalities in California are a result of speeding alone.

Speed and Different Crash Scenarios

The type of crash also plays a significant role in determining the severity of injuries. Speed exacerbates the dangers of each type of collision:

  • Head-On Collisions: These are among the most dangerous types of motorcycle accidents, and speed significantly increases the risk of death or severe injury. The combined speed of the motorcycle and the other vehicle involved in the collision creates massive impact forces.
  • Crashes with Fixed Objects: Striking a fixed object, such as a guardrail or a tree, at high speed can be catastrophic. The sudden deceleration can cause severe internal injuries and trauma.
  • Lane Departure/Run-Off-Road: Even if another vehicle isn't involved, losing control of a motorcycle at high speed can lead to a devastating crash. Riders may find themselves unable to negotiate a curve or avoid an obstacle, resulting in a collision with the pavement or surrounding terrain.
  • "Dooring" Accidents: Being "doored" is when a car door opens into a motorcycle's path. It can be particularly dangerous for motorcyclists, especially if the rider is speeding. This only compounds the problem. The suddenness of the event, combined with the rider's speed, makes it nearly impossible to avoid a collision.

The Legal Ramifications of Speeding

Exceeding the posted speed limit is not only dangerous; it's also illegal. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident while speeding, you could face criminal charges, including reckless driving or even vehicular manslaughter, depending on the circumstances. Furthermore, speeding can significantly impact your ability to recover compensation for your injuries in a personal injury claim. Insurance companies often view speeding as a sign of negligence, which can reduce or even eliminate your chances of receiving a fair settlement.
